Design in Public explores the interesting considerations and conundrums of designing artwork for everyone.
Experience familiar streets through fresh eyes, hear the stories behind the artworks, and have a chance to hear from some the artists involved in Whanganui’s public art.
This series of free talks will showcase the city’s creative history through public artworks designed by emerging, local and nationally significant artists.
There will be three sessions for this event, one on foot and the others will be on wheels, so make sure you pick the right fit:
Walking Tour: Friday 23 October, 2:30-3:30pm - a short and sweet survey of 13 artworks in our arts precinct for those who prefer a stroll.
Cycle Tours: Sunday 18 October and Sunday 25 October, 1pm-2:30pm – a leisurely tour on wheels that rolls into a wider selection of 23 artworks. BYO bicycle or scooter or hire a bike: more details below.
Cost: Koha, bookings appreciated.

Need Some wheels?
For just $15 you can hire a bicycle from the Riverboat Centre & Museum based at 1A Taupo Quay for this tour.
Step through and high bar bikes are available, along with a helmet and bike lock.
Make sure to call the Riverboat Centre team ahead of time to secure your ride.
Health and Safety
Tours will be cancelled in the case of inclement weather.
Wear comfortable and appropriate gear for the cycle tour – a helmet, hi-vis, and closed-toe footwear are the basics.
Follow the road rules and stay with the group and the tour leader’s instructions to keep on track. We’ll make sure you are fully informed on the route before we kick off.
Children (16 or younger) should be accompanied by a parent.
