Artist, Jeweller, Weaver and Researcher

The Price of Change Ltd.

Matthew McIntyre Wilson is a Whanganui-based artist, jeweller, weaver and researcher of Taranaki Iwi, Ngā Māhanga and Tītahi descent. His practice brings together whakapapa, mātauranga Māori, customary weaving technologies and contemporary craft. Through museum, archival and community-based research, he examines the knowledge held within kākahu, hīnaki, kupenga, kete and other taonga.

Recent projects include Whatu Atu, Whatu Mai and the Tylee Cottage Artist in Residence programme, where he developed work connected to the Whanganui River and customary fishing technologies. He has recently returned from Scotland, where he explored textile design legacies and museum collections. This research has led to a new area of inquiry focused on pauku, their construction, material knowledge and histories.
