Professor Johnson is Professor Toi Hangarau, Creative Technologies, at Massey University and Head of School of Te Rewa o Puanga, Music and Screen Arts.

Through design and art, Johnson explores how Toi Māori, mātauranga Māori, and cosmo-genealogical narratives shape the lived experiences of people in Aotearoa.

His practice follows a single thread across many domains, from contemporary art and typography to public infrastructure, medtech and AI. In each context, the work asks a clear question. What does it look like when Toi Māori and mātauranga Māori are at the centre from the beginning, not applied after the fact.
